The problem of accurately placing wider than normal self adhesive labels onto a variety of tubular packs has led Ashbourne Biscuits Ltd to invest in a high speed Spectrum labeller designed and manufactured by Sessions of York. Apart from being available with a suitably wide deck, the Spectrum labeller also offered this major manufacturer of quality biscuits a simple but efficient means of changing settings between products. Ashboume Biscuits had been successfully using another Sessions labeller for a number years. However, with the advent of a new design of extra wide labels, the existing machine proved to be unsuitable for adaptation. Because Ashboume Biscuits was planning to install a new packaging line, the company felt a new applicator, built specifically to handle the wider labels, would represent a cost-effective investment. Following evaluation of several labelling systems on the market, it was decided that the Spectrum labeller offered the best solution and a custom-modified system was quickly built by Sessions. The Spectrum labeller is being used to apply self-adhesive decorative and informational product labels to the tops of tubular packs. The machine leaves a part of the label hanging. When the pack reaches the packing table the suspended part of the label is manually pressed down over the edge and wrapped around the pack before the product is put into cartons. To avoid problems arising at the manual part of the operation, the top sections of the labels have to be applied very accurately. Because the Spectrum labeller is controlled by PC, product settings can be stored and finely adjusted to provide pinpoint accuracy in positioning. Settings for a number of products can be stored in the computer and retrieved as required. The operator simply has to follow the settings card for each new product. Ashboume Biscuits has currently set up the system for eight different labels and further products are soon to be brought on-stream. Ashboume Biscuits, a family-owned manufacturer of biscuits and flapjacks, supplies many major high street retailers and a variety of exclusive big city stores. In addition, Ashboume Biscuits' own brand products are exported throughout the world and are especially popular in the USA. |
