Discovering
New Earswick 2000 - 2007: Essays from the New Earswick Bulletin (Oct
09)
Elisabeth and Ray Alley came to live in New Earswick in 1998, and soon began
to play an active part in Village affairs, both on the local Parish Council
and as contributors to the community magazine, The New Earswick Bulletin.
Ray's skill as a photographer was greatly valued, whilst Elisabeth's articles
on topics of local interest soon became a regular monthly feature. At the
end of 2007, publication of the Bulletin had to be temporarily suspended,
and in conjunction with Richard York, it's former editor, Elisabeth set about
compiling this collection of essays. The result is a unique document reflecting
life in a busy village over a period of nine years, and in a very real sense

Pere
David 1826-1900 - Early Nature Explorer in China (Oct
09)
This small volume limited edition publication is presented as an appreciation
of a little known but important figure in the natural history world. Jean
Pierre Armand David was a French priest who travelled extensively and had
a passion for nature. His name will forever be linked with the giant panda,
the handkerchief tree and the deer named in his honour as well as the Buddleja
(Buddleja Davidii). Armand's love of nature was a road to God and the truth.
He travelled more than 7,000 miles much of it on foot and it is estimated
that he found more than 1570 plants including 250 new species.

Natural
History at Bootham (Jun
09)
2009 marks the bicentenary of Darwin's birth and 150 years since he published "On
the Origin of Species". The establishment of Bootham's Natural History
Society (reputedly the oldest in Britain) agreed "in the schoolroom
in Lawrence Street on Fifth day, the 14th of 8 month 1834", falls exactly
halfway between these dates and at that very time Charles Darwin was on shore
from HMS Beagle in Valparaiso, Chile. In celebration of the founding of the
Natural History Society at Bootham School (York) in 1834 this book depicts
the work produced by pupils at the school during the early years of the Society
and indicates the diversity of interests and later careers of the pupils
concerned.
